Jewish BMD – Poland

Jewish Birth, Marriage and Death Records in the Polish State Archives

Records are in Polish, German, Russian; some headings in Latin. Apart from the Warsaw district listings and census sections, all other links are to records from synagogues or other Jewish organizations. Dates, where they appear, refer to records that have been digitized, but gaps may be due to the original records being missing. Records are either listed by province or grouped according to the state archive (Archiwum Państwowe) that they were originally kept in.

We thank David Price, JRI-Poland volunteer translator and member of JGS Toronto for supplying these links.

Some useful Polish terms:
Bozniczego (synagogue), urodzen (births), malzenstw (marriages), zgonow (deaths), cywilnego (civil registration register), powiat (county), gubernia (governorate), Acta statu (State records)

Warsaw, 1826-1912

Warsaw, 1808-1825 by district(cyrkułu)

You might be able to learn the district where your relatives lived from other sources, such as later vital records searchable at JRI-Poland or the homeowners’ lists searchable in JewishGen’s All Poland Database  or at genealogyindexer.org.

Records from synagogues and other Jewish organisations

The following links are to records mostly from ‘synagogue districts’, but also ‘Israelite civil records’ and records of ‘non-Christian faiths’. They are grouped into regions. The names for towns are as given in the archives of the time, but because of the many changes that Poland has endured over the years, the modern name may be different. Information on these changes is contained in JewishGen’s Community Database.  Names are anglicized and listed without the diacritics found in the Polish language.
